The men were told that the war was going to be over by Christmas and that when they go home they will be heroes and they would come back very rich and famous. Also, young men like the idea of marching around in smart uniforms, going abroad (most of them had never left their homeland in their lives), fathers wanted to leave their responsibilities as fathers and husbands and have an adventure. Furthermore, men that stayed behind were handed white handkerchiefs and feathers by young girls which is a sign of cowardice
Contrary to what they were promised (the war would be short and they would come back rich), the war took four years before it was over and when the men that hadn't died or ran away came back their families rejected them and they were forced to live on the streets. They couldn't get jobs because either they had amputated limbs so they couldn't work or they were mentally damaged so they couldn't think straight
