This was the Schlieffen Plan.

Which involved Germany going through neutral Belgium to (surprise) attack France. Then they would turn around after fighting France and then go after Russia whose slow (not-industrialized country/) army would be ready now.

this plan did not work very well. they took to long fighting France mainly.
