The Vietnam War was part of the Cold War. At the time, there was a vast global struggle between the Soviet bloc and the West. It was feared that if communist North Vietnam were to take over the non-communist south, that would just be one more step toward the global domination of the communist Soviet bloc. As it turned out, this fear was entirely misplaced.
