Beecause it was a war. wars are always bloody and brutual with one side trying not to fail and the other side doing the same. They're put in a situation where it's fight and try not to die or run away, be captured, and executed. most logical people would pick the first choice because then they had a chance to live. Plus they were fighting for what they believed in. Belief can be the most powerful driving force on earth. look at the Islamic extemist or even the founding of America. America was founded and fough for based on their beliefs(which were different from anywhere else in the world at that time).
