In the years leading the to outbreak of World War 1, alliances were made among the great powers in Europe to create what is known as a "balance of power." The assassination of Archduke Ferdinand drew the Austro-Hungarian Empire into war with Russia. Austria-Hungary's alliance with Germany forced Germany into the war, and Russia's alliances with England and France forced them into the war as well. With the single declaration of war between Austria-Hungary and Russia, all of Europe's great powers were suddenly at a state of war with one another.

It's a little complicated, so let's try to make this easy.

In 1914, Bosnia was ruled by Austria. The Archduke was killed by Bosnian rebels who wanted Bosnia separate from Austria; these rebels were helped by some military officials from Serbia. Some Serbians wanted Bosnia to split from Austria and join Serbia.

After the assassination, Austria (which was much larger and more powerful than Serbia) sent an ultimatum to Serbia demanding basically that Austria be allowed to partially take control of Serbia so they could arrest the murderers; if Serbia refused, then Austria would declare war. Serbia accepted the ultimatum except for one part, which they legally could not do. Austria then prepared for war.

Serbia happened to be closely allied with Russia; Russia was also allied with France and Britain. Austria was allied with Germany and Italy. The Emperor of Germany, the King of Britain and the Emperor of Russia were all cousins (and even looked alike); so the Emperors of Germany and Russia sent a bunch of letters back and forth trying to avoid war, but ultimately failed. At this point, the war started thusly:

1. Austria declared war on Serbia.

2. Russia declared war on Austria.

3. Germany declared war on Russia and France. Germany knew France was allied with Russia and would declare war.

4. France declared war back.

5. Germany invaded France, but they also invaded Belgium to do it.

6. Britain, who was allied with Belgium, declared war on Germany.

7. Italy decided not to join the war- they said that Austria declared war first, so they didn't have to help. In truth, they had never really liked Austria and just didn't want to help them. In 1915, they even switched sides and fought against Austria.

8. Germany secretly convinced the Ottoman Empire to declare war on Russia and her allies (this wasn't hard, since the Ottomans hated Russia). Germany gave the Ottomans a small naval fleet, which the Ottomans used to attack Russian Crimea, thereby declaring war on Russia.

Franz Ferdinand was the Heir to the Austrio-Hungarian throne. After his death by Gavrile Principi, a Serbian terrorist, Austria-Hungary blamed the Serbian government for the assassination and made three ultimatums that if not met, would result in war:

1. Put down all nationalist hatred against Austria-Hungary

2. Punish all those involved in the assassination

3. Allow Austria-Hungary officials into Serbia to help crush the Black hand (Which also means giving government power to Austria-Hungary)

Serbia had a problem with the third one, so they didn't agree to it. Since Serbia has already created a secret Alliance with Russia and Austria-Hungary with Germany, they weren't afraid of the war because they thought it'd be quick and easy since they have back-up.

The thing is, Russia also had an Alliance with Britain (And their colonies) and France while Germany had a bunch of Colonies that would get involved as well, and later, Italy got involved too.

So after Austria Hungary declared war on Serbia, Russia declared war on Austria-Hungary. Then Germany declared war on Russian and France declared war on Germany and Germans as well to France. Then Germans invaded neutral Belgium to get to France, so Britain declared war on Germany. Then ALL of Britain's colonies (Canada, Egypt, Arabia, Tunisia, Algeria etc etc) were involved.

So Franz Ferdinand and his death triggered a world war to star

When the archduke was assasinated, Austria basically said, Serbia, you did it! Serbia said, no we didn't! Austria said, we'll fight you, with the Germans at our side. Then Serbia said, Fine! But we'll have Britain at our side! And that's how it began.

You mean World War 1, Archduke Ferdinand was the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, and after his assassination, the Austrians and Hungarians blamed Russia, so they declared war, so Germany and others joined the Central Powers to help the Austro-Hungarians. And others like France, the US, Italy, etc. joined up with Russia, being called the Allies. If you need more info, check wikipedia.

Central Europe was already a hotbed of competing nationalism, and in the Balkans, the Serbians chafed under Austrian rule, creating an unstable political situation.

The assassination caused a chain reaction because of all the treaty obligations among European nations. When Austria-Hungary attacked Serbia in retaliation for the assassination, Russia intervened to help the Serbs. Germany, still nursing a grudge against France, joined in alongside Austria-Hungary. France and Britain were brought in because of an alliance with Russia.

Germany and the Ottoman Empire were allied with Austria-Hungary, and Bulgaria joined the Central Powers (making the Triple Alliance a Quadruple Alliance). Britain, Russia, and France (the Triple Entente) were later joined by the US as Germany's U-boat force tried to cut off shipping to their enemies.
