Germany - Hitler wanted to take over Europe, perhaps the world Italy - Wanted to take over Africa and southern Europe Japan - Wanted to take over Asia and the Pacific Ocean United States - Was invaded by Japan Great Britain - To stop Nazi expansion in Europe Soviet Union - Was invaded by Germany China - Was invaded by Japan Australia - Was invaded by Japan Canada - To stop Nazi expansion in Europe (the above Allied countries were not taken over by the Axis, they were, in my opinion, more important than other Allied nations) There are other countries involved, some were invaded and occupied by the Axis, some were allies of the Axis, some were allies of the Allies.

For various reasons. Some countries were forced or bullied into joining one side or another. Others joined willingly for political reasons. Some were pulled into the war on one side simply because they were invaded by the other side. The type of government of any country was no indicator as to which side it would take in this war.
