The participating armies' organizations were as it turned out totally unprepared for the logistical demands of the Crimean War when it happened. This showed in a lot of ways, and medical care was one of them. There were not nearly enough qualified doctors and nurses, sick quarters were totally inadequate for the Crimea's winter conditions and hygienic and bedding conditions were appalling. So many sick and wounded died simply from neglect and the privations of hospital housing.

It should be noted however that at the time medical knowledge and treatment was primitive at best. There were no effective cures for most diseases nor antibiotics, and anyone more than just slightly wounded was simply lucky if he did not die of gangrene or other wound-related infections a little later.
