President Wilson's decision to stay out of World War I was initially pleasing to so many Americans simply because his isolationist viewpoint was their own. It was not until 1917 that the general American sentiment transformed into active desire for war, which was also the same point at which Wilson himself had become convinced that war was necessary.
War is a terrible thing. You really can not give a value to the life of a young man, killed in the prime of life. Add to that the cost of the war machinery. The US was not attacked nor under threat of being attacked. Our only interest was possible loss of trade. Many Americans were quite happy to stay out of the conflict.
