Because the southern states felt that the government was taking too many liberties with their rights to rule themselves. Slavery only sparked the decision to secede as it was starting to be a burden with the invention of synthetic cotton in England and was going to be eliminated anyway. Tensions over Business Taxes were already being debated before slavery.
