The Germans surrendered because their Furher was dead along with the best of the male population of Germany. The Russians were rampaging through Berlin. On the Western Front American, Britain and it's empire had forced their way onto enemy soil. At home th Germans suffered food shortages etc.

Because after Canada had took Vimy Ridge, Germany had lost a great number of troops. Same thing at Passendale. Germany could no longer fight knowing they couldn't win. It of would be suicide. So they surrendered.

The Nazis were soundly defeated on both the Eastern and Western Fronts. Hitler had committed suicide. They had no real army, no real air force and they had no people to fight or equipment or food. They had no other choice but to surrender. Their people were homeless, starving and needed a miracle. The Wehrmacht (army) was reduced to nothing and they were starving too.

Simply put, they were outnumbered, outgunned, and facing revolution by the starving population. The Americans were sending over a million fresh troops, while the German army was exhausted from four years of war.

Add to that their allies were collapsing (Turkey, Bulgaria and Austria all surrendered shortly before Germany did).

Hindenburg and Ludendorff came up with a last-ditch idea to win the war in the spring of 1918, by bringing over a million troops from the former Eastern front (the Russians had surrendered and collapsed into revolution by then), but the offensive failed. At that point, American troops began to arrive in large numbers and the Allies began to push all along the line. The worn out German army couldn't hold, and the High Command decided it was better to surrender while they were still fighting in France, rather than wait until they were fighting in Germany.
