The Spanish Civil War was fought within the country between the Nationalists and the Republicans. It was an internal conflict caused by an attempted coup by the Army on the government. The Nationalist were aided by Germany, Italy and Portugal while the Republicans received support from monarchists and the Soviet Union. It was sometimes seen as a dress rehearsal for WW2.

There were numerous causes to the Spanish civil war, but the main cause was the opposition of the highly conservative Army to the socialist republican government. Many army leaders were catholic and supporters of the recently deposed Spanish monarchy. They viewed the (largely) atheistic republican regime as a threat to their way of life and to traditional values. Another factor was the personal ambitions of General Francisco Franco, who exploited the fears of his colleagues to incite revolt.
