The reason Imperial Japan bombed Pearl Harbor was to cripple/destroy the US Pacific fleet in order to prevent it intervening in the Japanese invasion of Southeast Asia. The Japanese leadership hoped that rather than fight a protracted two front war with Germany and Japan, the US government would sue for peace. Needless to say, they were wrong.
