The reason Imperial Japan bombed Pearl Harbor was to cripple/destroy the US Pacific fleet in order to prevent it intervening in the Japanese invasion of Southeast Asia. The Japanese leadership hoped that rather than fight a protracted two front war with Germany and Japan, the US government would sue for peace. Needless to say, they were wrong.

Because during that time, US is Allied Powers while Japan is Axis Powers. So by any means, US is gonna to ensure Japan is defeated. (Or the other way round too.)
