Because the British had the fanciful, though strategically ingenious, idea of supplying Russia from the mediterranean rather than via the arctic or baltic sea routes. The problem being Turkey is in the way & the sea lane into the black sea would need to be clear of mines & shore defences. Had the attackers, having got ashore, got on with the invasion instead of defending the landing sites then the invasion might well have been a success. As it was it was a dismal, costly failure in which the lives of many Commonwealth soldiers were needlessly lost for no purpose whatever.
what was the purpose of the dardanelles campaign when there was a foothold already in jerusalem ? ( british/allies )
The goals of the Allied attack on the Dardanelles during World War I were to secure a maritime route to Russia, weaken the Ottoman Empire, and potentially knock it out of the war. By capturing the Dardanelles Strait and the city of Constantinople, the Allies aimed to open a new front, relieve pressure on the Eastern and Western fronts, and bolster their strategic position in the region. Ultimately, the operation sought to establish a supply line to the Russian forces and encourage Balkan nations to join the Allies. However, the campaign ultimately ended in failure and significant loss of life.
The Allied troops aimed to control the Dardanelles during World War I to secure a vital supply route to Russia and to open a new front against the Ottoman Empire. Capturing the Dardanelles would allow for easier naval access to the Black Sea, facilitating the movement of troops and resources. Additionally, it was hoped that this campaign would help to knock the Ottoman Empire out of the war and bolster support for the Allies. Overall, controlling the Dardanelles was seen as a strategic move to weaken the Central Powers and enhance Allied military efforts.

See the link below. The Dardanelles was not part of World War 2 but rather World War 1. Editor's note. It was the Brits (namely Winston Churchill, in World War 1, of the admiralty) who wanted to secure the Dardanelles strait to control shipping access. At the time Britain controlled Turkey. There was warring going on there during World War 1. See the link below for the story of the Battle of Dardanelles.
Battle of Gallipoli of 1915.
The purpose of the Gallipoli Campaign was to capture the Dardanelles Straits that were held by the Ottoman Empire. The straits would allow the Allies access to the Black Sea and thus they could get to Russia using a route other than the German-patrolled North and Baltic Seas.

Turkey controlled the Dardanelles
The major goal of the Gallipoli Campaign was to occupy the Ottoman-controlled Dardanelles Straits. If the Allies had the Straits, they would have a route to the Russian ports on the Black Sea and would be able to supply their isolated ally.
The major goal of the campaign was to capture the Dardanelles Straits from the Ottomans and open a line of supply to Russia through the Black Sea.
