The 1943 Battle of Kursk (in the Soviet Union) occurred for several reasons. First, the basic goal of the Germans was to 'pinch off' a large bulge in the Soviet front-line as a first step towards a larger offensive. Second, the German High Command (especially Hitler) seemed to refuse to believe that the tide of war was turning against Germany; thus, resuming their general offensive actions in the East was almost taken for granted as a reasonable course of action.

The Battle for Kursk began as a German attempt to eliminate the Kursk salient in the hopes of achieving a victory where there would be large numbers of Russian prisoners taken like in the early day of Operation Barbarossa where the Russians were ill prepared for countering Blitzkrieg tactics ~ see related link below .
