first you must understand that the cold war was not an accual war it was an arms race between USA and USSR (present day Russia and many smaller eastern countries) during 1945-1980s and ended in the USSRs colapse this was the only time in history were if the 2 countries warred it would destroy civilization cause of new weapons called Strategic Nuclear missles and bombers a nuclear bomb is one of the most devastating and destructive weapons in the world heres a simple comparison. Modern nuclear bombs have the destructive power that 1 missle with 15 MRVS (multiple reentry vehicles) has enough force that it is more powerful of all the explosive power of every other war in history combined and it was only used in war 2 times in World War 2

The Cold War was refered to as "Cold" because a cold war means there is no fighting going on at all, but a "Hot" war is when there is fighting going on (Take WWII as an example for a hot war). But we got envolved with the war because our enemies were under a Communist Government and we were under a Democratic Government.
