The significance of the Battle of Fort Sumter for the American Civil War is difficult to over-estimate because the combat that broke out in and around it in April of 1861 was the basic cause of the war as a whole. Before April 12th (on which the South Carolina troops first besieged and bombarded the fort), there was yet hope for a peaceful settlement of North/South differences; after, there was only the prospect of resolution through violence.

In the context of the American Civil War, the importance of the Battle of Fort Sumter can only with great difficulty be over-stated. It was, after all, the cause of the formal beginning of hostilities between the North and the South. Before being fired upon on April 12, 1861, there was still hope for a peaceful settlement between North and South. Afterward, there was only year after year of violence and bloodshed before a victor could emerge from the conflict.

It was where the first shots of the war were fired - by Confederate artillery at the U.S. Army garrison of Fort Sumter, on an island in Charleston Harbour.
