The term nazi came into popular use after Hitlers failed 1923 coup on the Munich State Government, commonly known as the Beer Hall Putsch. Though the party had been gaining support since 1921 under Hitlers leadership, it received national noteriety through the Putsch. The name Nazi stems from the abbreviated form of Nationalsozialistische and was used commonly after the coup attempt to refer to a member of the NSDAP.
