Belgium was invaded by Germany on 4 August 1914, despite the fact that its neutrality was guaranteed by Britain, France and Germany. Since 1906 Germany had only one plan (the Schlieffen Plan) for a future war with France and that involved marching through Belgium. Incidentally, the original version of the plan involved marching through the Netherlands, too, but it was revised after Schlieffen's retirement.

Britain protected Belgium in World War 1 as they had an alliance at that time agreed almost 100 years ago.

When Germany start the schlieffen plan they must go through Belgium to attack France. So as soon as Germany set foot on Belgium Britain declare war on Germany.

Britain had guaranteed Belgian independence and it was a neutral country. When Germany invaded Belgium it brought Britain into the war and eventually America.
