General Erwin Rommel commanded the Desert Africa Corps and was called this for the skillful military campaigns he fought in the desert of North Africa.
He commanded the Deutsche Afrika Korps (DAK) or German Africa Corps. At first he and the German troops were under the command of the Italian Supremo Commando. Later Hitler promoted Rommel to a Field Marshall and all Germans and Italians fighting in North Africa was under his command.
