The major sources of natural rubber were in areas of Asia either occupied by Japan or in areas close to the conflict (Indonesia, Malaya, Singapore). The sources in Africa required a long transport chain out of the continent and across the ocean. So synthetic rubber (neoprene) was produced to fill the great demand for wartime uses.
It was rationed for things such as tires for military tanks, and rubber was a much-needed necessity during World War 2.
