Vietnam's environment was incredibly wet. Soldiers would trudge through the swamps daily. If they couldn't keep their feet dry, the soldiers would get something alike athlete's foot, and skin would start to peel. So, more accurately, it wasn't so much of the having of the socks that were important, so much as keeping them dry.
