(They could be from the same state, but electors from the presidential candidate's home state could not vote for both of them. So, if the election was very close, the vice-presidential candidate might fail to get a majority even though his running mate did. The Bush-Cheney ticket solved this problem by getting Cheney to establish a residence in Wyoming. )
