it is a time during the civil war that all the other people took other peoples things and did not think twice about it and didnt care who they hurt in the processe of doiing there crime full acts.

Actually, this person is almost right, but he doesn't explain that much. The Carpetbaggers were northerners that came south after the civil war in a period called reconstruction and they bought property at fire-sale prices and sold it at regular price. The Southerners couldn't do anything about it because they had lost the war. The name "scalawag" was created for the carpetbaggers.

Actually you are almost right. The term Scalawag was used to descibe southerners that agreed with what the Carpetbaggers did. That is the only problem that I saw in your explaination.

Back in the early 1900s, homeless people would bring their belongings in a suitcase, but back then the suitcases were made of cloth and looked kinda like bags with handles. So they nicknamed these people carpet baggers. There were a lot of people who carried cloth bags back then.

In United States history, carpetbaggerswere Northerners who moved to the South immediately following the Civil War, especially the Republican political appointees, seeking opportunities to enrich themselves at the expense of the Defeated southerners.

Both carpetbaggers and scalawags were derogatory names used to describe certain people during Reconstruction. Carpetbaggers were northerners who came to the south after the war to take advantage of the destabilized situation and profit from it. Scalawags were southerners who were supportive of the Reconstruction and Republicans after the civil war. .

A political candidate who seeks election in an area where they have no local connections. Also, a Northerner who moved south after the American Civil War. White Southerners feared they would plunder the defeated south. The name came from a cheap form of luggage made from carpet fabric
