The Lincoln-Douglas debates of 1858 spotlighted the vastly different ideologies on the issue of slavery. Lincoln argued against Douglasâ??s call to â??nationalize slaveryâ?? by ending the Missouri Compromise and the results of The Dred Scott decision. Douglas countered that Lincoln was a â??Black Republican abolitionist who wanted equal rights for Blacks and opposed Dred Scott because he wanted to push forward â??Negro rightsâ?? and the abolition of slavery.

Lincoln has acquired a name for being a passionate Abolitionist, which he wasn't - along with most Northerners.

His views on slavery did not much differ from Stephen Douglas's.

Their debate was about the legality of it, following the startling decision by the Supreme Court that slavery was fully protected by the Constitution - which appeared to mean that no state in the whole of the USA could declare itself to be free soil.

If taken literally, this would invalidate the new voting plan that Douglas had successfully advocated.

Abraham Lincoln said that slavery could exist in the United States if it did not spread. That means that the states that had slaves could keep them, but any new state added to the union could not have slavery.....
