merchants or people who owned stores were however the people who made the most money in the California gold rush, because they made the miners who were looking for gold pay extra for food and shelter because the miners had no choice but to pay for these things!

You see, blacksmiths wee required to make tools, transport services to transport, bakers and food suppliers to feed the miners, and So on and so forth. However, gold was very scarce in finding. Obviously, though, those that found gold did benefit from the gold rush- but in most cases, they wasted their money on things such as drinks and women- so, in a way, the gold diggers were, in fact, the community itself.
