merchants or people who owned stores were however the people who made the most money in the California gold rush, because they made the miners who were looking for gold pay extra for food and shelter because the miners had no choice but to pay for these things!
more people got poor because they did not find much gold and since the prices went up like up to $100.00 a drink people could not afford it so many people died and the people that did not find all that much gold just wasted their money coming there that they had before from the money they earned at their farms.
Virtually everyone benefitted from a gold rush except for the miners themselves. You see, blacksmiths wee required to make tools, transport services to transport, bakers and food suppliers to feed the miners, and So on and so forth. However, gold was very scarce in finding. Obviously, though, those that found gold did benefit from the gold rush- but in most cases, they wasted their money on things such as drinks and women- so, in a way, the gold diggers were, in fact, the community itself.

Also, since supplies were scarce do to the droves of miners living in the Californian territory, merchants were able to sell necessary supplies at sky-high prices.

The Gold Rush occured when gold was dicovered at the Sutter's Mill in California. Many people came to California very quickly to try and become rich. It greatly affected California with its population. Over 50,000 people came to California in one year! In 1850 (only 2 years later), California had to become its own state just because of the great increase in population.

Many peoe did not take much convincing. Newspapers around the world ran the headlines about the "new" Australian goldrush (as opposed to the Californian goldrush which, by then, had disillusioned many). Stories of just being able to reach down and scoop handfuls of alluvial gold nuggets from the surface abounded, and people were gullible enough to believe them.
