The United States of America is named after Amerigo Vespucci. Vespucci was an Italian explorer who discovered that Columbus discovered a New World: the Americas (which, too, were named after Amerigo). So that explains the America part. The United States part comes from the government of the USA: the USA is a republic and uses political regions known as states. These states are all united into one country, thus forming the United States.
