Lincoln watched the play from a box overlooking the stage. In the middle of the drama, John Wilkes Booth ~ a former actor, and brother to one of the most famous 19th century actors, Edwin Booth ~ entered the box. Closing the door behind him, Booth aimed his pistol at Lincoln's head and fired.
He slashed the President's aide, Major Rathbone, with a dagger, leaped to the stage (breaking his leg in the process), and fled. Lincoln died the next morning.
It is believed that Wilkes was part of a movement in the South to continue the Civil War to eventually reinstate slavery.
