For over a 100 years Jim Crow laws ruled and any African American who protested faced jail or worse. The KKK had people in the political system, police, courts, and businessmen so any African American who stepped out as an individual would have the odds against him/her. That is what makes Rosa Parks so brave and unusual. When she didn't move seats she was arrested, handcuffed, and fined 5.00, but she began a movement. The year of people boycotting the busses was not without problems and individuals were often harassed, but it is harder to stop a population of people protesting than one or two people. People died and were beaten trying to change the system of segregation, but King preached that to return violence with violence solves nothing (this is something we need to learn today). There is power and strength in a movement of people looking for a change.
