How did Hawaii become part of US?

In 1867, the same year in which Alaska was purchased, the United States took over the Midway Islands, which lie in the Pacific Ocean about 1300 miles north of Hawaii. That's how Hawaii eventually comes under the control of the United States.

President Polk sent several small expeditions into California to gage Mexicos determination about keeping Anglos out. Mexico had army units at the borders and patrolling along the coast. One group that came into the area was a group of men with John C. Fremont as leader. The Mexican army caught up with them outside of San Juan Bastista. The group was isolated on a mountain top with the army surrounding them. Yet, the army didn't put men on the back of the mountain so Fremont and his men escaped. They were able to report to the president that they thought California could be taken from Mexico. Not too long after in 1849 John Marshell finds gold in the traces of the Sutter saw mill in Colima. Soon the news of gold was spread across the nation and the gold rush was on. Over 10,000 wagons a day crossed into California and by 1850 the Mexican government had lost control. Fremont returned with his men and his first stop was to see John Sutter and when he got Sutter to go along with his plan to arrest the Mexican governorand to bring him to be held at the fort by Sutter. Fremont, then, went to Monterey to arrest the governor and take him to Sutter, declared the Bear Flag Republic, and moved on to Los Angeles to secure it. On September 9, 1850 California became a state.
