∙ 9y agoMadam C. J. Walker has been listed in some editions of the Guinness Book of World Records as the first American woman to garner a million dollars in assets. While other American women earlier had become millionaires, they either married wealthy men or inherited wealth from their fathers. There were a few African American men who became millionaires during the late 1900s through real estate investments and insurance companies. She founded her hair care company in 1906 and was a pioneer of the modern hair care and cosmetics industry along with women like Helena Rubinstein, Annie Malone and Elizabeth Arden. She amassed her fortune through the sales of her hair care products and through wise investments in New York real estate in Harlem, on Central Park West in Manhattan and in Irvington-on-Hudson, New York.
