There are two stories that need repeating.

(The first is commonly accepted.)

Thomas Lincoln died when he was only three days old. Dr. Daniel Potter was called in to treat Thomas but could not save the baby.

Note

The cause of death is unknown in this version. No birth certificate or death certificate was given. There is no evidence that Dr. Potter ever went to the Lincoln's cabin.

(The Second is almost unknown.)

Nancy Lincoln was married to Thomas Lincoln. Nancy Lincoln was having an affair with Samuel Davis. On the fourth of July 1811, Nancy and Samuel went on a picnic and horseback ride. At the picnic Thomas Lincoln was conceived. Six months later, January 1812, Nancy's husband was out on a drunk leaving Nancy alone to fend for herself and her two little children. Over night there was a deep snowfall and in the morning there was no wood in the firebox. Nancy was already exhausted from the constant, never ending, hard work and she had to go outside in the deep snow to get firewood. She overexerted herself and had a miscarriage. The baby was stillborn.
