Age and declining health and injury owing to falls are the probable causes of Mary Todd Lincoln's death. Later in life, she lost much of her sight to cataracts, and thus became prone to injury. She sustained a spinal cord injury in a fall (off a step ladder) in 1879, and spent the last few years of her life in bed at her sister's home. She died in 1882 on July 16th.
