Booth was an actor and it wasn't so much he knew the play but he knew the layout of the theater. He knew where Lincoln would sit, where his guard would be, and how to escape the theater once he shot the president. The fact that the president arrived late to the play and the guard had left his post for a drink across the street may have helped him. When Booth jumped from the presidents box his spur caught on the bunting and as he fell to the stage he broke his leg. He limped out to his horse and left Washington by the only route without federal troops.

When the spur on his boot, caught the flag, this caused him to injure his leg, although, it is likely that Wilkes Booth did not break his leg, as many sources represented, that he broke his leg.
