This question has several different answers. Some settlers were trappers and hunters, and as they moved across the plains they did so on foot or horseback. Other settlers were considered pioneers, and as they migrated west they would walk, pulling handcarts or use covered wagons pulled by teams of oxen. Later on as more people migrated west, they were able to go by train; the transcontinental railroad system.
