There were many dangers that were encountered in the 1800 American westward expansion. Many people did not survive.

  • People wore masks
  • Stopped at earlier destinations to settle
  • Ate fresh food instead of abandoned/ dead animals
  • Wore full body clothing
  • Got protection/ medicine from Native Americans or passing travelers
  • Taking extra stopps for resources
  • Pony Express riders switched positions with others every few miles (usually 10)

People traveling west through the Panama Canal area and around South America usually had no methods of protecting themselves because they had no knowledge of the disease.
