Today they would rather be called Kwakwaka'wakw, which means Kwak'wala-speaking-peoples. They lived on the Northwest coast of British Columbia, Canada. Historically, they mainly lived on fishing and food from the sea. They also did some upland hunting and gathers forest fruit and berries. This is an area very rich in resources so they were wealthy and very hierarchically stratified societies with nobles, commoners and slaves. Ornate weaving and woodwork were important crafts. Wealth and status were determined by how much you could to give away. The act of giving away your wealth was one of the main acts in a potlatch.
