Sod is related to lodge because sod grows on lodges in the plains.
The settlers built sod houses because of the lack of wood.
There were sod houses, which kept you warm in the winter and cool in the summer.
They built their houses out of sod because trees were scarce in the Great Plains, but the houses also were convenient... however, they were dirty and brought snakes, insects, and (of course) sod. Also, in bad weather, rain could leak through the roof, and sometimes even bring the whole roof down on the family. A sod house also was vulnerable to fires and hail, and could cause conflicts in those conditions.
The majority of the homes that were built on prairies were built out of sod.

Because it was so hot in the Great Plains region, the pioneers built their homes with sod roofs. Sod still makes a great insulator!

The plains were covered with long grass and grass typically grows in sod. When the sod is plowed it leaves large clumps that have to be broken up prior to planting anything. Thus "Sodbusters".
They simply used materials which were readily available and on treeless plains sod of turf were the easiest material to obtain.
