The United States of America consists of 50 states, the District of Columbia, and several unincorporated territories such as Puerto Rico and Guam.

While three of the states style themselves "commonwealths" they have all the rights and responsibilities of a state. Using the term commonwealth is an expression of history and makes no difference to their status in the union of "free and independent states."

The states are:
