Drafted during the years 1776 and 1777, while the colonists were still fighting for independence, the Articles of Confederation created a weak national government with most of the governmental powers retained by the states. The Articles provided no separation of branches. There was no president or any other independent executive, nor was there a federal judicial branch. Congress, the legislature, was the only branch of government. Laws required unanimous votes. Members elected to congress did not vote as individuals, but as states.

What document did the US Constitution replace?

Articles of Confederation

What event proved the articles of confederation were ineffective?

In U.S. history, there are two Articles of Confederation. The first was formed after the American colonists declared their independence from Britain and created their own government; the second when the southern states seceded from the North. In the second Articles, there was no event that proved they weren't working. They ceased to exist when the South lost the Civil War. The first failed mainly because there wasn't written into it a system of taxation that was equitable for the country to maintain a government, a military, and a presence on the world stage. After the War of Independence, the founders of the country decided that rather than revise the Articles of Confederation, they would rewrite a new Constitution, taking into account what they had learned after many years of war and independent governance.

Why did the colonists want a weak government?

The colonists didn't want a weak central government. They sought a central government with limits on its powers They didn't want a government that would act as a dictator, as the King of England did. Many colonists believed that if they had stronger state governments, more power would be vested in them. This led to the creation of the articles of confederation. the articles of confederation had many problems, so eventually the constitution was written. The colonists finally settled on a constitution that left all powers not granted to the central government, to the States.

Why was the national government unable to solve its financial problems?

The national government was unable to solve its financial problems, because under the Articles of Confederation, the government had no power to collect taxes. This was one reason why many favored a stronger national government.

Why did some Americans distrust the executive and judicial branches of government?

From the American Founding Period onward, some (and, at times, many) Americans have distrusted the executive and judicial branches of their own government for several reasons. First, these branches of government have both appeared to be and in actual fact operated like the same British governmental agencies that had oppressed the American colonies before the Revolution. Second, the innate powers of these branches of American government have been understood (not at all inaccurately) to contain the seeds of tyranny, as it may be put, for excessive and otherwise unjust actions against the American people.

Yes. In establishing a republic with a strong central government, the US Constitution resolved many of the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation. The three branches of the government encompassed the full range of law in the US.
