Lincoln grew up on a farm, and did, in fact, hire out to split rails. He worked as a store clerk and a postmaster while he studied for his law exams. He became a well-respected circuit-riding lawyer on the Illinois frontier, and served as a militia captain in the Blackhawk War. He was elected to the Illinois legislature, and then to the US House of Representatives, for only one term. Even though he lost his senatorial race against Douglas, it placed him in the national spotlight for his presidential run.
