Perhaps Arnold had thought he would be greeted as a hero in New York ; if so, he was badly mistaken. The younger British officers, who had been Andre's companions, despised this traitor in their midst. The older officers shunned him. So he was not welcomed, he had a few friends. They were thinking the next time there was a war who says he wont turn on us?

Benedict Arnold was never punished for treason. After his plot to turn over West Point to the British was exposed, General Arnold escaped and joined the British army. After the war, he lived in Canada and England, running a business trading in the West Indies.

After the American Revolutionary War, a war where he became a traitor to the Americans, Arnold was safe in England. Few people respect a traitor and Arnold gained no respect in England. His military career went nowhere. His name became synonymous with "traitor".
