How did the north and the south differ in the 1840s?

The north and south had very different ways of life. Their economies were based on very different aspects. The north had an industrial based economy when the south was based on agricultural. The wing party represented the north and democrats represented the south. The south encouraged slavery white the north tried to prevent it from spreading.

Although hard to believe, up until the very late 1840's (approx. 1848) the words North and South actually referred to the opposite of what the do now.

This is due to the original Oval Office being siituated on top of a large magnet, and to avoid the president being corrected by the people he served.
