The Dawes Act was passed in 1887 and it tried to dissolve Indian tribes by redistributing the land. It was designed to forestall growing Indian poverty, but it resulted in many Indians losing their land to speculators.
Jedediah Smith clearly thought American Indians were inferior to whites. He preferred to be on good terms with them, and did not allow people with him to harm them, but he when he met with hostility from them, he was willing to kill one or two as a show of force. I rather doubt that he hated them so much as that he did not respect them as human beings. There is a link below.

People became more willing to live farther from their work ~APEX
I am assuming that you are referring to Native American Indians and not Indians from India. The cultures were really quite different, although they did often work together to live of the land in a harsh climate. The Mormons lived much as other white men did, and were as civilized as they could be living in the 'wild west'. They had very strong traditional Christian values and worshiped and lived much like other Christians. The Native American culture was much different, most had no knowledge of Christianity and did not have comparable moral standards. However, both were generally willing to help each other in times of need, and both were fiercely loyal to their culture to the point of being willing defend and even die for it if need be.

The Indians were hostile but at the same time hesitant--skulkingn about in the trees, stealing tools.
