Racial violence in the north
The term for the southern states leaving the Union during the American Civil War is "secession." This movement began in 1860, following the election of Abraham Lincoln, and led to the formation of the Confederate States of America. Eleven southern states ultimately seceded, which contributed to the conflict between the North and South.

By the end of 1960, approximately 70,000 demonstrators had participated in sit-ins across the southern United States to protest racial segregation and discrimination. These nonviolent protests aimed to bring attention to the injustice and inequality faced by African Americans in public facilities, such as restaurants and lunch counters. The demonstrations played a significant role in the broader Civil Rights Movement.

Regulator Movement
Although racism certainly existed, and in various forms continues to exist throughout the US and the world, the concern of the Civil Rights movement at the time of King's famous speech was the institutionalized racism of the southern states. You did not find such things as "Whites Only" restaurants in the north.
