The first time (September 1862), he was hoping to force Maryland into the Confederacy. The second time (June 1863), he was wanting to invade the prosperous state of Pennsylvania, to feed and equip his barefoot troops.
The South relied on agriculture, especially cotton and tobacco , and used slave labor to do much of the work. The North concentrated on manufacturing and did not use slave labor. The North had extensive railroad connections- the South had few railroads. The Southerners were mostly Protestants of Scotch- English- Northern Irish decent. The North had more diverse backgrounds- people from Germany, Sweden, Holland, Irish Catholics and elsewhere, as well as the English. The North had more money and could better equip their forces. The also had a much larger navy.
The Union blockade greatly damaged cotton exports. And cotton was practically the only high-value export of the South. As a result of the blockade, cotton exports fell which hurt the South. In addition, the South was almost hampered in importing food, medicine, manufactured goods, and luxury items. And the food that was grown in the Confederacy could not just be shipped along the coast to places that needed it. There were severe shortages of practically everything and massive inflation. In addition, it caused a lot of hunger to both civilians and soldiers. Finally, the blockade reduced the importation of war materials to the South. Not just guns and munitions, but vitals like tents, blankets, and boots. As a result of the blockade, Southern commanders were often unable to properly feed, clothe, and equip their soldiers, and shortages of medicine were disastrous. Blockade runners grew into an industry run by British businesses. They supplied over 60% of the supplies used by the Confederate Army, and also provided some products from Europe and allowed the Confederates to export some cotton. It was not nearly enough, but it bought the Confederates some time. What bought the Confederacy more time were its armies coupled with the Union's failure to even capture Richmond which was 100 miles away from Washington DC. This 60% is very debatable. Certainly with regard to food supplies. The South continued to "grow" their own crops and before the fall of Vicksburg, drew supplies from west of the Mississippi.
Referring to the real life terms, Mercenaries are basically soldiers for hire. The companies they work for are called PMCs (Private Military Companies). Organizations like Blackwater or DynCorp. (modern day) train, equip, and hand out contracts to the Mercs. The Mercenary has been used throughout history and even ancient Egypt. These soldiers for hire are hired by military persons to do things regular military personnel aren't allowed to do like, Assassination Kidnapping, Torture, Murder in cold blood, Murder of Citizens, Interrogation w/ deadly force etc. etc. Mercenaries are on no ones side... They take the contract, do the mission, collect the money, and continue the process. Its a good living if you want those things on your conscience.
Lee's attempted invasion in June 1863, hoping to feed and equip his troops with plunder from this prosperous state. It led to his historic defeat at Gettysburg. NEW RESPONDENT Furthermore the McCausland's Chambersburg Raid, ordered by Confederate Gen. Jubal Early, that took place on July 28 - August 4, 1864. This was not an ordinary raid. Early ordered McCausland to place a ransom of $ 100,000 in gold or $ 500,000 in Northern money on the town of Chambersburg as a retaliation for the burning of three houses in Jefferson County -VA carried out by order of the federal military authority. Ifl the Pennsylvanians refused to pay McCausland had to burn the entire Town. As the money had been removed from the banks before the arrival of the Confederates, the order was accomplished: 459 buildings were smoldered in ashes, including 278 homes and businesses, 98 farm buildings and 173 outbuildings.
Not all members of the nobility were trained to do combat, though many were. A well known historical person who was a member of the nobility and decided not to be a knight was Peter Abelard.
Neither side was ready for operations, as demonstrated at the First Battle of bull Run. They still had to recruit, train and equip large armies.

You cannot voluntarily move an Equip card from one monster to another, or unequip it and have it be destroyed, unless another effect lets you do so. Tailor of the Fickle is one card. The other situation is with Union monsters who turn into Equip cards. These can unequip themselves as an activated effect and summon themselves back to the monster zone.
