The United States became divided in the 1790s as a result of public conflict. The main conflict was on the understanding of the American revolution and this happened during John Adams' term as the president.

I don't know what, but I know that when the US was a small country, it was because the French, British and Mexicans didn't want to give up their area. The U.S. president Thomas Jefferson sent Captain Meriwether Lewis and his assisstant William Clark set off through the French and Mexican areas and found Oregon and Washington with Sacagawea of the Shoshone tribe. There, the US knew that was an area not taken by the British, French or Mexican. Then, there was the Lousiana Purchase, and the Americans purchased land from the Mexican or French and owned down by Louisiana. This is how the U.S. grew, plus Lewis and Clark's 2-year adventure to the west coast help America grow. Since 1806, the US bought more territory. That pushed the Spanish down, and made Mexico, and pushed the French up, and then made French-Canadians, who live in Quebec nowadays. This is how the US grew.

Well the two main political leaders that i know of are Jefferson and Hamilton. Hamilton was a federalist and he had different plans for shaping the economy and during the French Revolution he thought they should suck up to the English rather than the french because he thought the french had no chance in winning the war. Jefferson on the other hand was republican and also had different plans for economic growth he belived that America should focus more on agricultural products rather than industrial. Also during the french revolution he thought American should give France special treatment since the English treated the colonists inferior to them.

i hope this helps i am currently in U.S. history Ap and this is all i know about that

The division was between the federalists and the anti-federalists, the federalists believed in a strong central government; and would give them power over the individual states, and the anti-federalists believed in a focus on the states, and allowing them to run almost completely independent of the central government.
