what is the cost of owning land
It provided for a system of scientific surveying of the Northwest Territories lands and the subsequent subdivision of them based upon a rectangular gride system. The basic unit was called a township, measuring 6 miles on each side, which would be further divided into any number of rectangular parcels of individually owned land. The smallest parcel of land one could buy was set at 1 square mile or 640 acres, at a cost of $1 per acre. Furthermore, each township was to set aside at least one section for the establishment of a school. This procedure formed the basis for American public land policy until the passage of the Homestead Act of 1862.
