England had taxed the colonies unfairly, and they did not want the British soldiers, or redcoats, in their cities. Also, England did not let the settlers settle west of the Appalachian Mountains, so they were enraged. The Boston Massacre, where the redcoats killed several Americans, fed the colonists' anger as well.

The main reason the American colonies went to war in 1775 was to gain independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. They were angry over taxation without representation. Britain also eliminated any self government in the colonies.

Most of them went to the plantations in the south. Mainly Georgia and South Carolina.
The southern colonies were populated because people in England heard of the riches in America. They soon learned how well cash crops grew such as indigo, tabacco, and cotton. Men who were in debt had the option under James Oglethorpe to travel to Georgia to work as indentured servants. Not many went to the southern colonies for religious reasons.

The main reasons why America broke away from England included the follow reasons: The right to worship as they pleased. Taxes. No rights of a speedy trial, or fair justice. After they were attacked, had their homes burned, and were chased out of the American colonies, they went north to what was then called Upper Canada, now Ontario, and they received free land grants, to settle in the counties of Lanark, Refrew, Frontenac and Hastings. Some went to Nova Scotia, and some went to western Ontario, around London and Windsor. All of this happened during the lead up to the rebellion in the colonies. Pre 1776. You need to understand that not ALL of the people in the 13 colonies were in favour of separating form Britain, not by a long shot. Only about a third of the entire population of the colonies were, in fact , rebels, Many of the people didn't want anything to do with the idea, and they were attacked and terrorised by the rebels, to the point that they moved out to the north, to Canada.
