b. british and french recognizing Texas' independence
Depending on how you look at this question, I think it could go either way. At first I thought it was A. because the Mexican war for independence took up time and that would delay annexation of Texas, but after the capture it took nine years to complete the deal. Then when you think about the British and French getting involved, that could also be the answer if you think about how their recognizing Texas as free caused controversy about whether the U.S. Pres. should push the annexation through Congress or not.
The issue of slavery. the North didn't want to create another slave state because of the imbalance of votes in congress toward the issue
they feared texas would join britian and declare an end to slavery
Well no one really knows the correct answer because all documentation of the annexation of Texas Was lost in a tragic fire which killed approximately 40 people.
The United States had attempted to balance the number of slave states with the number of states that opposed slavery. By allowing Texas to become a part of the United States, the balance would have shifted.
After Texas gaining their independence from Mexico. Texas asked the US to annex them thus entering the union as a slave state.
Texas practiced slavery, and the US already had adequate problems maintaing a balance between the north and the south on that issue. Texas had made an effort to go it alone as a Republic, but it lacked recognition by most of the world and had created an enormous burden of debt. Texas needed a handout in a big way.
