Europeans saw the lands in the Americas as free for the taking. The Native Americans had a totally different view of land ownership than Europeans, which worked to their serious disadvantage.

Since they lacked the necessary antibodies to fight off such viruses, the Indians perished quickly after the Europeans arrived. In an ironic sort of retaliation, the sexually transmitted disease of syphilis infected many Europeans. In the century after Columbus made his epic arrival, about 90 percent of the NativeAmerican disease and forms of violence destroyed population.
